Introducing, Island Series: SS25 Sumatra! This "three stripes" brand combines the beauty of Sumatra's culture, especially from the northern part, into the Samba design.
Inspired by the traditional cloth of the Batak tribe, Ulos, adidas Sumatra comes in a cool maroon color, complemented by golden emboss accents that enhance its appearance.
This adidas Sumatra edition is an original collection from the adidas Originals Island Series for Indonesia. It differs from the adidas Bali, Java, and Borneo collections that have been released since 1977 and were reintroduced last year in 2024.
Sumatra is the third largest island in Indonesia and is also the sixth largest in the world. This large geographical size corresponds with the diversity of customs and cultures present on Sumatra Island, especially in the northern part, which is now highlighted in the latest adidas Sumatra collection.
From a cultural perspective, the maroon color on the samba silhouette of adidas Sumatra is inspired by the Ulos Ragidup cloth, a high-quality woven fabric typical of the Batak tribe.
Briefly, the Ulos Ragidup that inspires adidas Sumatra symbolizes the well-preserved patterns of life by the people of Sumatra and is often used in sacred ceremonial events.
On the other hand, the golden emboss accents that adorn the "Samba" engraving and the adidas Originals Sumatra logo on the tongue of the shoe seem to be chosen because Sumatra Island is also known as the "golden land," as mentioned by Anthony Reid in his book, A History of Sumatra: Between Indonesia and the World (2011).
