Bluesky is About to Surpass Meta's Threads
Bluesky, which was once associated with Jack Dorsey, becomes the decentralized answer to Elon Musk's X, and quickly catches up to Threads.
The browser version of Bluesky has already surpassed Threads in total usage a few weeks ago, but now the Bluesky app has exploded to 3.5 million daily active users. That's only 1.5 times the users of Meta's Threads, which is a really cool achievement, especially considering Threads had 5 times the active users compared to Bluesky at the beginning of the month.
This shift in momentum is really significant, especially after the recent elections in the US. According to data from Similarweb reported by the Financial Times, the number of Bluesky users surged by 300 percent since Election Day. Many journalists, academics, and companies have left X (formerly Twitter) which has been a mess under Elon Musk, and Bluesky quickly became their favorite platform.
Why are people choosing Bluesky over Threads? Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg's decision to downplay political content on Threads seems to have disappointed many users who wanted engaging public discussions. Many critics see this as an attempt to remain on good terms with elected President Donald Trump, which diminishes the platform's potential to become a space for political and cultural debate.
Nevertheless, Bluesky is still in the development stage. Its rapid growth has caused many issues to arise, such as downtime, disruptions, and scams. As more people use this latest "Twitter replacement," there will undoubtedly be some unavoidable problems along the way.
