Disney+ announces its latest collaboration with legendary creator Hideo Kojima: an animated series titled DEATH STRANDING ISOLATIONS (working title) scheduled to premiere exclusively on Disney+ in 2027. The announcement was made directly by Kojima during his appearance on the Disney+ Originals Preview stage at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, accompanied by the series director, Takayuki Sano.
The DEATH STRANDING game, first released in 2019, has gathered over 20 million players worldwide thanks to its blend of cinematic ambition, metaphysical elements, and themes of emotional connection. The franchise recently continued with DEATH STRANDING 2: ON THE BEACH, launching exclusively for PlayStation®5 on June 26, 2025. The next expansion of the franchise takes the form of an animated series that promises a new perspective while maintaining the original spirit of Kojima’s work.
Style and creativity
The series will be presented in the style of traditional hand-drawn 2D animation crafted by the best Japanese talent from E&H production studio. The key character designs showcased in the announcement were created by Ilya Kuvshinov (known for his work on Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2045), providing a fresh visual touch while remaining in line with the atmosphere of the Death Stranding world.
Brief premise
Set in the world of Death Stranding, DEATH STRANDING ISOLATIONS presents an original story that stands apart from the game’s narrative path. When a mysterious “explosion” brings forth the souls of the dead into the physical world, it triggers mass destruction and leaves the remaining human civilization on the brink of extinction, fragmented and isolated. Amidst this devastation, a legendary porter embarks on a journey to deliver goods and hope, trying to reconnect those who are still alive.
The series highlights several perspectives: an old man struggling to live off the grid, a female warrior building a world through strength, a boy harboring a grudge against the porter, and a girl finding comfort in solitude. All these stories converge as humanity faces a new threat of destruction from another looming explosion on the horizon.
