Almost 8,000 Games on Steam Use Generative AI in Their Development Process

This information was obtained through the use of the Steam API by Ichiro Lambe, CEO of Totally Human Media and a former developer at Steam Labs, on July 13, 2025. According to his findings, as many as 7,818 game titles are known to include GenAI elements in various aspects of development.

As a comparison, in April 2024, only about 1,000 game titles on Steam disclosed the use of GenAI. Based on the total number of games available on Steam, about 7% of them now use GenAI. In fact, from the total games released in 2025 until mid-July, nearly 20% have reportedly utilized this technology.

GenAI technology is used by game developers in a variety of aspects, from creating visual assets, audio, narrative text, to story structure. Additionally, this technology is also used to produce marketing materials, compose internal code, and develop game logic.

Although many developers have openly communicated the use of GenAI, there are some cases where its usage is not disclosed transparently.

The significant increase in the use of Generative AI technology in the gaming industry marks a major shift in how game development is conducted. On one hand, this technology offers greater efficiency and creative potential. However, on the other hand, ethical challenges, transparency, and regulation become issues that need to be addressed. Going forward, the successful integration of GenAI in this industry will heavily depend on collective efforts to formulate fair and responsible guidelines and policies.
