Jujutsu Kaisen: Who is Kurourushi?
Get to know Kurourushi better, a special grade cursed spirit in Jujutsu Kaisen. This article thoroughly discusses the profile, cockroach manipulation abilities, Ranshoto weapon, and his crucial role in the Culling Game arc in Sendai Colony.
Kurourushi is a registered special grade cursed spirit and one of the players in the Culling Game. He is placed in Sendai Colony and holds 54 points.
Appearance and Personality

Appearance Kurourushi has a body that is deep black without clear contours, with a terrifying humanoid face resembling an insect, complete with many eyes and long antennae. Although his arms have an insect-like structure, their texture resembles human skin, making him an extremely unnatural being. He has an insatiable hunger and is capable of parthenogenesis (asexual reproduction).
Personality His actions are largely driven by instinct, particularly his hunger. However, he shows a high level of intelligence for a cursed spirit, such as avoiding unfavorable opponents and using weapons strategically.
Nonetheless, his morality is completely self-centered, only caring about himself and cockroaches. He repeatedly asserts his own desires—such as questioning why others interfere in his business or expressing his fondness for the taste of blood—while completely ignoring the existence of others.
Background
Initially, Kurourushi was a cursed spirit under the control of Kenjaku's Cursed Spirit Manipulation technique. After being released, he was deployed to Sendai Colony as a player in the Culling Game.
Due to his power mismatch with Dhruv Lakdawalla, Kurourushi entered a hibernation state (long sleep), stipulating that he would only rise if Dhruv was killed. However, when Yuta Okkotsu killed Dhruv, the condition was met and Kurourushi awoke. Driven by hunger, he attacked Yuta—who possessed a very large amount of cursed energy—and nearby civilians.
Abilities
Cursed Technique Kurourushi can manipulate real cockroaches enhanced with cursed energy. Individually, these cockroaches are not very dangerous, but he can control them in extremely large numbers, forming a massive swarm capable of covering roads and tunnels. This swarm can devour humans instantly, leaving only bones behind.
Shikigami Earthen Insect Trance A shikigami summoned by forming hand seals and chanting the spell "blinding, blinding, blinding" (JP: 瞎 瞎 瞎, Kurai Kurai Kurai). In the story, he summons these two shikigami simultaneously.
Cursed Tool Festering Life Sword (JP: 爛生刀, Ranshoto) A cursed tool shaped like a machete with countless cockroach eggs stuck to the blade. When this sword wounds an opponent, the eggs will enter the wound and hatch instantly, causing the cockroaches to consume the victim from within. Due to this effect, Ranshoto is described as a cursed sword where "life and death intertwine." Its design is inspired by ootheca or the egg case of insects.
Role in the Story
Kurourushi fights Yuta Okkotsu in Sendai Colony. With his abilities, he manages to push Yuta into a tough battle and attempts to devour him after Yuta temporarily lost consciousness due to internal damage from Ranshoto. However, he was caught off guard and defeated when Yuta bit him and injected the Reverse Cursed Technique directly into his body.

Although at that time Yuta was not fighting at full strength (because he was hiding the Reverse Cursed Technique and assigning Rika to protect civilians), Kurourushi's power still forced Yuta to use it, demonstrating strength comparable to a special grade cursed spirit.

Later, Kurourushi unexpectedly reappears. As the three-way Domain Expansion clash between Yuta Okkotsu, Takako Uro, and Ryu Ishigori collapses, he intervenes and attacks the defenseless Uro as his cursed technique is in a burnout state.
This version of Kurourushi is actually a descendant created through parthenogenesis. Inheriting the fear directed at his original form, this "child" possesses comparable power. Although he managed to bite off Uro's arm, he was ultimately exorcised by Yuta using the Reverse Cursed Technique, just like his predecessor.
