Fortnite Players to Receive $72 Million in Compensation from FTC!
After waiting two years, Fortnite players who were harmed due to illegal premium practices by Epic Games are finally set to receive compensation through the FTC or Federal Trade Commission in the United States.
The case of illegal skin purchases and child rights violations that occurred in 2022 was won by the FTC, resulting in Epic Games having to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in fines. The compensation awarded is substantial, amounting to $72 million, or about 1.14 trillion rupiah.
According to the FTC, within the next week, all eligible Fortnite players will be notified of their compensation, which is about $114. Although it took a long time, at least these players will still receive compensation.
This shocking case arose when Fortnite implemented illegal premium practices in America in 2022, using a method referred to as “Dark Pattern” and also collecting data from children under the age of 13.
Dark Patterns are often used by games that employ premium monetization, by placing buy buttons in easily clickable locations, requiring just one press to complete the purchase.
Ideally, premium content purchases using real money should go through a verification button to avoid purchase errors; unlike the Dark Pattern, which was also used by Diablo IV for premium battle pass purchases some time ago.
Unfortunately, such predatory practices are still commonly found in games with premium systems, and players without strong legal protection in their countries can only resign themselves and not receive compensation like players in America.
