Minecraft Creator, Notch, Just Announced Minecraft 2!

In a thread on social media, Markus 'Notch' Persson teased fans with plans for a spiritual successor to Minecraft called Minecraft 2.

He asked fans on his X account (formerly Twitter) about what they wanted from the next project. He said, "Make Minecraft 2" or continue his work with a concept he describes as "a traditional roguelike... mixed with a tile-based first-person dungeon crawler."

"The new game I'm working on right now will be a traditional roguelike (like 'ADOM,' 'nethack,' and others) mixed with a first-person dungeon crawler (for example 'Legend of Grimrock' (especially the second one), 'Eye of the Beholder').

But then I think, maybe there are people who like my work, but do not share the same taste in retro nostalgia, and would prefer me to make something that serves as a successor to Minecraft. And of course, I would definitely take the money for it."

Will Minecraft 2 Really Happen?

Whether Notch will actually create the spiritual successor Minecraft 2 remains a question, but it seems likely he will bring it to life if that is what fans desire.

So far, Microsoft and Mojang have been quite silent regarding a Minecraft sequel. They seem to prefer to continue updating the existing Minecraft game and bring it to new platforms - we can assume this game will be available on the Nintendo Switch 2 when it is finally released.

So, this new game that Notch may be working on could be the closest thing fans will get to Minecraft 2. Since he stepped away from Minecraft development after selling the mega-hit game to Microsoft in 2014, Notch has rarely been involved in development.

Aside from a few small projects, like a free two-hour Unity demo and some smaller game projects, this renowned developer has not released any Minecraft-scale projects since the game was launched.
