X Will Display User's Country of Origin When Posting to Increase Transparency
X will display the user's country of origin when posting. This feature is being tested to increase transparency and combat misinformation on the platform.

X the platform formerly known as Twitter—is testing a new profile display that will show the country of origin where the user is actually posting from, along with some other account information, as an effort to enhance transparency and user trust.
According to Nikita Bier, X’s new head of product, this change is part of a profile update currently being tested. In a post on X, Bier explained that the new profile page will display data such as: the country where the posting is done, when the account joined X, the access method (e.g., web, app, or other devices), and how many times the user has changed their username. This information differs from the location that users have previously been able to list themselves in their profiles—the new data will be determined based on the account’s actual posting activity.
“When you read content on X, you should be able to verify its authenticity,” wrote Bier. According to her, displaying the posting origin aims to help readers assess the context and reliability of posts—especially amid issues of misinformation and racist content that increased after changes to the verification policy.
X also plans to give users control over privacy: there will be a toggle to hide certain information. However, Bier emphasized that if users choose to set or obscure certain data, it will still be clearly marked so other readers know which information has been hidden. The company is still experimenting with what types of data will appear on profiles, so the list of displayed elements may increase or decrease during the trial period.
The background of this change is rooted in the shift in X’s verification system after Elon Musk took over the company. The blue verification badge that once indicated a company-verified account can now be obtained through a paid X Premium subscription—a change that once allowed identity forgery and misuse of verified status by spammers or provocateurs. This profile update is intended to add context to accounts alongside, or as a complement to, the existing verification system.
As an initial step, Bier said X will start implementing this new policy on some X employee profiles to gather feedback and observe the impact before rolling it out to the general user base.
Changes like this demonstrate the platform’s effort to restore trust and help users better assess content credibility—while still providing privacy options for individuals who need them.
