The Conjuring: Last Rites, the Conclusion of the Horror Saga of Ed and Lorraine Warren
Since its debut on the big screen in 2013, James Wan's film The Conjuring has successfully created a haunting and memorable horror universe.
Through this saga, viewers are invited to delve into the adventures of Ed Warren (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) as they confront supernatural phenomena from real-life cases filled with terror. Now, their long journey will reach its conclusion with the latest film, The Conjuring: Last Rites.
This was reported through an Instagram post by James Wan, which featured an image of two chairs with the names of the characters Ed and Lorraine Warren.
"Always good to see and hang out with old friends. Gonna miss everyone. End of an era,"
Each film in The Conjuring not only offers a horror sensation but also presents the dramatic side of the true stories they adapt. Moreover, the characters Ed and Lorraine are actually inspired by real-life figures who are well-known in the paranormal world.
The first film, The Conjuring, highlights the story of the Perron family, who were haunted in the 1970s. Then, The Conjuring 2 focuses on the Enfield poltergeist case that gained notoriety in England. Meanwhile, the latest film, The Conjuring 3, is based on the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, who claimed to have committed a crime due to demonic possession. All of these stories are truly adapted from pieces of cases that were directly handled by the demonologist couple.
The End of the Conjuring Era
Designated as the final story of Ed and Lorraine Warren, The Conjuring 4 is expected to be the climactic peak of horror in the entire Conjuring franchise. Given this, the film may focus on the most iconic case of Ed and Lorraine: the Amityville story, which previously brought them into the public spotlight. However, as of now, there have been no hints or confirmations regarding the case that will be featured in The Conjuring 4.
After starting production in 2022—just a year after the release of the third film, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It—this project was delayed as the crew had to focus on The Nun II, which was filmed in France. Although The Conjuring 4 marks the end of the story for the paranormal couple in facing demonic threats, the horror universe they have built over the past decade will continue through other spin-off series such as The Nun and Annabelle.
In the expanding universe of The Conjuring, not only the story of the Warrens captures attention, but also other iconic horror characters. As we know, this universe includes three main films starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, two films about Valak the demon nun featuring Taissa Farmiga, three films highlighting the terrifying doll Annabelle, as well as the standalone film The Curse of La Llorona, which features a cameo from Annabelle and reinforces its connection to this universe.
Although the Conjuring saga is coming to an end, James Wan has several new horror projects ready to fill the void. These include a Conjuring series for the Max platform, Teacup, which is an adaptation of the novel Stinger by Robert R. McCammon for Peacock, a live-action Gargoyles series for Disney+, and The Monkey, a collaborative project with legendary horror writer Stephen King.
No one knows how far Wan's creativity will take us, but one thing is certain: his horror legacy will continue to live on, even as the Warren duo must say goodbye.
