Fumihiko Takaba is a participant in the Culling Game in Jujutsu Kaisen. As a modern sorcerer whose technique was awakened by Kenjaku, he fights while pursuing his own unique philosophy that prioritizes laughter above all else.

During the Culling Game, something seemed to change within Takaba after hearing words from a senior comedian. Wearing a costume of a character called "Centerman", he explores the colony and fights without killing anyone. Due to his personal principles, he continues to survive battles while keeping his score at zero points.

Appearance and Personality

Appearance Takaba's signature costume is modeled after the character "Centerman" played by Taizo Harada in the comedy sketch The Centerman Are You Fifty Fifty? from the Japanese comedy TV show Warau Inu, which was popular in the late 1990s to early 2000s. This costume only covers half of his body vertically.

Personality Takaba is always energetic and often suddenly cracks jokes. When his jokes fail to elicit laughter, he sometimes gets annoyed.

He has stated that he will never do anything that steals someone's smile in his lifetime. Although he accepts the use of violence in battle, he refuses to take a life even if his opponent is evil. This principle leads him to protect others without hesitation. He once shielded Megumi Fushiguro from an attack with his own body and even showed willingness to help someone he considered a villain, relying on his instincts.

Background

Takaba currently works as a stand-up comedian. However, it is revealed in the bonus pages of manga Volume 24 that he originally performed as part of a comedy duo.

During his stage performances, he uses a signboard for his comedy routine. Unfortunately, his jokes rarely get strong reactions from the audience. Applause is very rare, and he remains an unknown and unsuccessful performer. A senior comedian even suggested he reconsider his career path.

Later, Takaba unexpectedly confronts Kenjaku in battle. During this encounter, his past becomes clearer. Kenjaku is also very knowledgeable about comedy, partly because manzai itself originates from traditional Japanese performing arts rooted since the Heian period.

Takaba initially started comedy because he wanted people to understand him better. He believed that if others truly knew him, he would no longer feel lonely. However, reality proved harsh. His efforts bore no fruit for a long time, his comedy duo eventually disbanded, and Takaba began performing solo.

A senior comedian named Ken encouraged him by saying it's impossible for a hundred out of a hundred people to find someone funny. He also told Takaba that he personally did not hate Takaba's material.

However, Takaba used those words as an excuse to escape. Afraid of getting hurt, he interpreted them in a way convenient for himself and gradually stopped taking comedy seriously. In the end, he began ignoring people who didn't laugh at his jokes.

Fumihiko Takaba is one of the most unique sorcerers in Jujutsu Kaisen. His cursed technique, Comedian, allows his imagination to reshape reality itself, creating unpredictable and often nonsensical effects during battle.

Cursed Technique: Comedian Takaba's cursed technique is an extremely unique ability that turns situations he finds truly funny into reality.

If Takaba feels confident that something will provoke laughter, that imaginary scenario will manifest in the real world. In theory, this grants the technique power approaching omnipotence. The narrative in the story even suggests this ability has the potential to rival Satoru Gojo.

Because this technique is driven by Takaba's personal sense of humor, its effects are extremely difficult to predict and often resemble the exaggerated logic of a comedy sketch.

Technique Weaknesses Despite its tremendous potential, this technique has critical limitations. Takaba himself is completely unaware that he possesses this cursed technique. Furthermore, his ability heavily depends on whether he personally believes something is funny. If even a slight doubt arises and he thinks his idea might not be funny, the effect will fail.

In other words, his power does not depend on the amount of cursed energy he has. What truly determines whether the technique succeeds is the mental strength of a comedian who fully believes in his own humor.

Extraordinary "Gag" Logic Combat Strength In battle, Takaba generally fights using physical attacks. However, the results often defy normal logic.

His cursed energy can suddenly surge, allowing him to perform attacks like a dropkick at such high speed that even experienced sorcerers cannot react. He can also survive attacks that would normally be fatal. Even after receiving heavy bombardment, he may only suffer minor burns or temporary bleeding that oddly often disappears without explanation.

According to Kenjaku, the phenomenon is not because the attacks fail to work, but rather a situation where the attacks are considered to have "never happened" from the start. This ability resembles the narrative logic of gag (comedy) manga, where characters might experience extreme accidents but appear unharmed in the next scene because the injury itself is not important to the joke.

Technique Effects Involving Opponents The effects of Takaba's technique are not limited to himself. His opponents can also become part of the comedic situation. For example, an enemy might suddenly find scribbles appearing on their face, be forced to wear a bandana or sunglasses, or be dressed in an unexpected costume.

Role in the Culling Game Arc

During the Culling Game, Takaba explores the colony in his Centerman costume. He first gets involved with Megumi Fushiguro when he suddenly intervenes as Megumi is about to be hit by an attack from Iori Hazenoki. After joining Megumi and helping him during the battle against Hazenoki, Takaba then joins the Tokyo Jujutsu High group as an ally and begins cooperating with them.

Trivia: Inspiration Behind Takaba's Costume

Takaba's signature costume is based on the character "Centerman" played by Taizo Harada on the show Warau Inu.

At that time, commercials featuring female dancers dancing to the song Synchronized Love became very popular in Japan. The comedy sketch parodied this trend by featuring Centerman, a man wearing clothes only on the left half of his body while the right half remains naked, dancing alongside the female dancers.

In the comedy sketch, Centerman appears as a hero of justice who claims to be the fairest and asks two characters to divide money into what he calls a "true 50:50" split. However, his standards of fairness are unconventional; for example, he might argue that a 7:3 split is actually more appropriate than a literal half-and-half split. Because of these odd standards, he sometimes criticizes the characters even after they agree on how to divide the money.
