Fortnite Tests Experimental AI NPCs
Epic Games has officially launched the latest experimental feature that allows AI-powered NPCs to be present in Fortnite Creative (Creative Mode), alongside the update released on April 16.
This move marks a new chapter in the evolution of Fortnite's creative mode, where content developers can now create virtual characters that are not only static but capable of speaking, reacting, and interacting dynamically with players.
Conversation Feature: From Persona to AI NPC
In an official blog post dated April 16, Epic Games announced that the Conversations system—previously known by the tool name Persona—is now available as an experimental feature. With this tool, creators can bring to life AI-powered characters with unique personalities and voices.
"Instead of just assembling dialogue trees for characters on your island, this conversation feature transforms NPCs into AI-powered characters capable of unscripted dialogue and interacting with players, akin to quest givers or narrators," wrote Epic Games.
Capabilities Offered
These new-generation AI NPCs possess several advanced capabilities, including:
- Remembering gameplay flow – They can record what has happened in an ongoing session.
- Contextual responses – Each response is tailored to player input and actions in real-time.
- Voice communication – Interaction is conducted through natural verbal dialogue.
- Triggering in-game events – NPCs can activate various events or occurrences based on the conversation that takes place.
There Are Limitations to Note
While opening up vast creative opportunities, Epic Games still implements ethical boundaries. Developers are prohibited from creating AI personas designed to:
- Provide medical guidance or mental health consultation
- Act as romantic partner simulations (role-play)
Furthermore, the ability to publish content or projects using this Conversations tool is not yet available at this time. This means the feature is still in a limited testing phase.
